Open range branding is the traditional way of monitoring a herd of cattle. During branding young cattle are gelded, branded, and get a yellow ear tag. I shot one of this type of events in La Junta, in Southeastern Colorado. This type of branding means no corrals or pens; Cattle are controlled by wranglers on horseback. Branding irons are heated in an open fire pit. The young animal must first be separated from momma cow. Not to worry, after being handled,, the kids ump up and run back to the mother. Branding can take long hours, but the reward for the wranglers is a fabulous western style meal.
